Albendazole.

Albendazole is a broad spectrum anti-helminthic. Its inhibitory effect on tubulin polymerization which results in the loss of cytoplasmic microtubules in the intestines of nematodes worms, ultimately causing energy depletion and death of the organism.

Indications:
• Single or mixed intestinal parasites.
• Ascaris lumbricoides (roundworm), Trichuris trichiura (whipworm), Enterobius Vermicularis pinworm/threadworm), Ancylostoma duodenale and Necator americanus (hookworm)
• Taenia spp. (tapeworm) and Strongyloides stercoralis.
• Treatment of Giardia (duodenalis or intestinalis or lamblia) infections in children.

Points of interest:
• Effects on ability to drive and use machines: Since dizziness has been reported following treatment with ZENTEL, caution is recommended in patients performing skilled tasks.

Active Ingredient:
Albendazole.

Side effects:
• Vomiting.
• Dizziness.
• Increased liver enzymes.
• Nausea.
• Loss of appetite.

Cautions :
• History of hypersensitivity to albendazole or constituents.
• Leucopenia may occur when ZENTEL was used for periods longer than recommended.
• Early pregnancy, women of childbearing age should initiate treatment .
• Treatment with albendazole may uncover pre-existing neurocysticercosis, particularly in areas
with high taeniasis infection.
• Patients with rare hereditary problems of galactose intolerance.

Interactions:
• Praziquantel.
• Ritonavir.
• Phenytoin.
• carbamazepine.
• phenobarbital.

How to use:
20 ml (400 mg) of ZENTEL suspension as a single dose in both adults and children over two years of age.
The usual dose in children between one and two years of age is 10 ml (200 mg) of ZENTEL suspension as a single dose.
